FISHERS OF MEN |
I’ll pass.
The seashell, especially the scallop, is the symbol of baptism in Christianity. The baptismal font is often shaped like a scallop, or decorated with one. The dish used by priests to pour water over the heads of catachumens in baptism is often scallop-shaped. The scallop, too, is the symbol for the Apostle James the Greater. St. James used the scallop shell during his pilgrimage to beg for food and water. Even the poorest people could fill the small shell, so he always found help along his way. Later, followers of St. James wore the scallop-shell symbol on their hats and clothes and it became the symbol of pilgrimage. CHRISTIAN SCALLOP SHELL Fertility is also associated with the scallop shell, as exemplified in ancient and renaissance paintings of Venus, the Roman goddess of fertility and love. She is often shown coming out of a scallop shell. Perhaps this is why some pilgrims, walking the way of St. James, used the scallop in a pagan ritual to encourage child-bearing.
I read that before deciding to pass.
If you notice, the scallop shell turns up in a lot of religious paintings of the Middle Ages and Renaissance era, for no obvious reason to modern eyes. They are just ‘there’ in a painting. Kinda like “The Da Vinci Code”, only real.........
Just wonderful! Thank you kindly, Dan.

GIOVANNI SERODINE
“Calling of the Sons of Zebedee”
All beautiful paintings and illustrations. Too many to have favorites. In many paintings, the disciples (especially Peter) are depicted as old men, maybe so the viewers would recognize who they were.
#15 Ghirlandaio, is a scene from the larger painting at #20.
I am trying to indicate that I would like to stay focused on the central subject of this thread, if you please.
Thanks - enjoyed 12 by Vasily Polenov

Serodine certainly has them listening intently to Jesus.
I don’t recall encountering many by Serodine....
"You can't tell the players without a scorecard!" (Old pitch by ballpark scorecard sellers.)
Sure, no problem.
At this point I would also point out that the earliest Christian symbol was of a fish, and survives to this day.
It was also used as a ‘sign’ to other early Christians who were persecuted for their beliefs and could be initiated by a convert to see if the person they were talking to was also a Christian, by drawing an arc line in the sand with their foot while talking and the other person would finish the other side of the fish with their foot, without anyone else noticing or paying attention to their conversation.................
I notice that as well. Why ‘old men’? I always thought of the Apostles as men in their 20’s and 30’s. They had to be fit and healthy to walk all over the area from Galilee to Jerusalem and Capernaum..................
On those rare occasions when I come across a Polenov, I am always captivated. Thank you for that link.
Good Morning Dan, and good morning to all.
Many fine choices here indeed, favorites:
#9 Armitage
#12 Polenov
#26 He Qi
Thank you Dan, for being willing to spend the time and effort to create a special place where believers can meet, and share =:^)
Thanks, Leon.
I’m delighted anytime someone likes a painting by He Qi. He is a special talent.
